Manila, Philippines –President Rodrigo Duterte may be ready to extend the lockdown period by two more weeks, a move that will further affect the country’s casino industry.

The President’s office has revealed that he is currently evaluating the facts and will soon reach a decision on whether or not the lockdown should be kept in place for two more weeks at most. The quarantine period initially only covered the Metro Manila region, but was later extended to cover all of Luzon, the main island of the country. Domestic air, sea, and land travel have been already brought to a halt, as well as all gaming activity following the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR)’s order to shut down all gambling venues under its control.

As the coronavirus (Covid-19) continues to sweet across the globe, extended quarantines and area-wide shutdowns have become quite the norm everywhere. Pushing the timeframe back two weeks more would be similar to what has happened in U.S States such as Nevada, New Jersey, and so on.

Keeping the ban

President Duterte’s spokeperson Salvador Panelo, is quoted saying that prematurely lifting the ban could “wipe out the gains we have so far achieved in containing the virus.”

Panel added, “The President is all ears and eyes on this unfolding reality and expert opinions. He is evaluating the best option to take that will effectively ensure the success of our war against this wily and faceless global enemy. He will make his decision in due time. In the meantime, we call on our country men to be steadfast in our commitment to take care of each other in this imminent threat to our nation’s survival.”

The Philippines currently has over 3,500 cases of the coronavirus, of which 152 have resulted in death. A number of lawmakers have expressed support in keeping the suspension in place in hopes of keeping the number from going out of control.
