Gambling vs Gaming: What’s The Difference?

Gambling vs Gaming: What’s The Difference?

Even though many people consider gaming and gambling to be two completely different things, but nowadays they may be used as interchangeable terms.

Many people have started objecting to the use of the term “gambling” in reference to people playing for real money at a casino. This is because it gives them an image of something illegal or addictive that can lead them to serious financial troubles. So, many casino players around the world use “gaming” instead of “gambling.”

While you might think there’s hardly any difference between the two terms, if you take a closer look, you’ll find that there is a strict division between them. This article will try and name some of the main factors that make gaming and gambling different from each other.

Gaming and Gambling: The Difference

The main difference between the two types of entertainment all boils down to money. With gambling, you need to spend money to play, while with online video games, you can play most games for free.

But with the rise and appearance of different fantasy games where you purchase loot boxes with random rewards using real money, the fine line between video gaming and gambling is somewhat blurred.

It would be a lot better and easier to divide games into separate categories and devote some time defining them.

What Are The Different Forms Of Gaming?

You might be surprised to find out that the first attempts to make something resembling modern-day video games can be traced back to the mid 20th century—specifically in the forties. But the real boom happened in the 70s, when Atari’s Pong video game first appeared. This revolutionary game and event in the digital entertainment industry triggered a global gaming craze that remains at its peak to this day.

We will try to describe the most popular forms of gaming today. The gaming world has become an extremely profitable market, and many gaming communities have started appearing all over the world.

Video Games

Most of us have, at some point in our lives, tried playing a video game or two. Whether you used a console, PC, or phone, the fact is you played it. Video games produce feedback on a display based on how the players controlling the game/s interact with the user interface (UI). Traditionally, video games are played on a 2D display (ex. TV screen or computer monitor), but modern technology has now made it possible for video games to be played using virtual reality (VR) technology.

Video games use a multitude of different controllers, which have also evolved over the years. PC gaming is usually controlled using mouse and keyboards, with the latter having a range of different layouts. Modern computers also have the option to plug in different controllers.

The most commonly used controller varieties are PlayStation and Xbox, while Nintendo, the third console giant, appears to change controllers too often for one to be considered it’s signature. Many also acknowledge traditional joysticks commonly known as arcade sticks. Although joysticks are not really used that much these days, they used to be a staple in many arcades, especially for fighting games.

The gaming industry has grown and changed so much since its conception, and playing games is considered a normal hobby these days. Many different categories of games are available, but people still tend to associate gaming with role-playing video games.

Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games

Massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) are a different story in comparison to regular roleplaying (RP) games. As its name suggests, massive multiplayer online games involve a large number of players from various parts of the world participating in a single game as part of one team or one of the opposing ones. MMORPG games normally involve creating a specific virtual world or civilization as a group/team and defending it from the enemies.

MMPORG games are highly compatible with almost any device, so you won’t have any problem finding a platform to play them with. Just make sure you have a good internet connection so you can play without any hitch.

One of the most popular (and most successful) MMPORG games is World of Warcraft or commonly known as WoW. This game attracts around 8,000 to 9,000 new players every month. From 2005 to 2009 the profit from this multiplayer game was an impressive $2.2 billion. At the peak of its glory, it had almost 10-11 million subscribers.

Role-Playing Games (RPG)

Role-Playing Games are games where players join fictional adventures via a fixed or self-made fictional character. Most games of this kind involve a game master (GM) or oftentimes referred to as a dungeon master (DM).

Players advance through the game following a storyline laid by the GM, and the actions they choose can impact the narrative in a major way. Role-playing games come in different varieties, including miniature war games, tabletop games, and live-action role-playing (LARP).

To Sum It Up

As you can see, there are different forms of gambling that you can try investing your money in. Now that online casinos offer players the chance to play their favorite casino games at home, the number of gamblers dramatically increased. But, most casino-goers don’t like the idea of calling their favorite pastime as “gambling” because it has such a negative image. This is why people involved in the gambling business has replaced the word gambling with gaming—a word that doesn’t have a negative connotation.
