Betting and Gaming Council urges UK government to allow casinos to reopen soon

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) soldiers on with its campaign encouraging the UK government to allow casinos to reopen from July. The BGC does so by highlighting measures implemented by operators to protect customers.

Although betting shops were allowed to reopen on June 15, it was announced earlier this month that casinos would remain closed. This is despite the fact that hotels, pubs, and restaurants were allowed to reopen on July 4.

The BGC condemns this decision as “inconsistent and nonsensical,” even going as far as highlighting the steps taken by operators on June 30 by visiting the Rialto Casino in London.

According to Michael Dugher, BGC chief executive, they were “obviously disappointed” by the decision of the UK government to keep casinos closed on July 4. Dugher urged ministers to look at the efforts operators have taken to protect customers.

“We want to play our part in kicking the economy, just like other parts of the leisure, entertainment and hospitality industry,” Dugher explained. “In this time of great economic uncertainty, the contribution that casinos make to the nation’s finances cannot be underestimated.”

“We hope that the Government will respond positively and quickly—and avoid the threat of significant job losses,” he added.

Impressive safety measures

The BGC explained that the 120 casinos in the UK have rolled out several strict safety measures, including mandatory sanitation of seating, table areas, and chips before and after use.

In addition, customers are also limited to playing at a single table and are required to wash/sanitize their hands before and after each play. Masks will be provided upon request as well.

“I was hugely impressed by what I saw at the Rialto Casino, one of the Grosvenor casinos,” Dugher said. “From markings urging social distancing on the floor, to multiple sanitizers, sanitized chips, and screens separating customers and staff, it’s obvious they have pulled out all the stops to make sure they can reopen safely.”

Dugher added he knows other operators across the country are applying the same efforts and investment.
