ANGER MANAGEMENT: Coping Mechanisms for the Irate Gambler

For many people, gambling is a source of entertainment. Many people who play inside the casino gamble responsibly and have never once developed gambling problems. Whilst it is true that not all gamblers have the proclivity to ruin their finances and wreck their personal relationships with their significant others – gambling when left unchecked could potentially lead to serious problems like anger issues.

When this habit-forming activity creeps into your system and take over your life, it may have adverse effects on some facets of your life including, but not limited to, financial, social, mental, and psychological aspects.

A research in Australia studied the negative behaviours of frequent gamblers. The data yielded shows that men and women manifest different types of symptoms that are viewed as “red flags” by the casino employees. It states that women are more emotional and noticeable in the sense that they show visible signs of distress and depression, which can be resonated in their sudden disinterest in their personal grooming. Conversely, men are likely to show feelings of anger and frustration, which can sometimes be manifested through physical violence and damage to properties.

Gamblers are more prone to violent behaviour. This has been attested in the study published in the journal entitled Addiction. It reveals that men who gamble are more likely to act violently towards others. Likewise, gambling in any capacity whether pathological or casual gambling significantly leads to increased risk of violence including domestic abuse. A lot of gamblers are in denial that their gambling practices are causing harm and thereby affecting their health and relationships with their significant others. As time goes by, anger issues magnify until it becomes destructive. And only then the individual seeks help or proactive treatment. Chances are, when you are reading this article you might have done or said something out of your anger outbursts. Don’t worry I am not a saint. Nor am I writing this to cast the first stone. That said, this is the part where you commit yourself to that decision against all odds.

The Action Plan

This is where self-study and plan commence.

It may be helpful to keep a daily journal of your anger management requiring you to record the things that make you angry and the consequences of your responses.  This journal will help you identify the anger triggers and may enlighten you as to how proportionate or exaggerated your outbursts are to the various situations that might have provoked you. The more you know what ticks you off, the better it is to handle your responses responsibly and increase your chances of changing how you express anger.

You may also opt for receiving help or training from the professionals. There are a plethora of professional anger management courses that exist in multiple platforms: seminars, workbooks, videos and the like. These are instructional in nature and are designed to help you cope with your anger issues. Make sure that you find treatment services that deliver tailor-fitted intervention according to your needs. Know that these will not be effective unless there is commitment, dedication, and persistence involved.

You can also find yourself a support group system. This allows you to share your innermost feelings in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Doing this would allow you to gain better insights into yourself and your anger problems.

Bear in mind that there are no sure-fire ways to address anger issues and these solutions do not magically work in just one snap of the finger. Every day, you need to make a conscious decision to seek ways of placating your anger issues.


Given the fact the gambling is widespread due to its accessibility and convenience, especially with the rise of online platforms, it is the most opportune time to call for greater awareness and appropriate security measures. Indeed, gambling is a double-edge sword and when it is used the wrong way – the gambler may cut himself and eventually bleed.

It is high time to step up and call for accountability. Apparently, responsibility should be two-way. Gamblers should practice responsible gambling. They need to understand that compulsive gambling and anger are significantly related. Conversely, the gambling enterprise has the responsibility to develop policies and programmes that will counter or mitigate gambling addictions. Mental health should be addressed by spreading education and awareness.
